Our Story
In the year which saw the birth of George Washington, the first President of the United States of America, who would become one of a line of famous members of Freemasonry, Anchor and Hope lodge No.37 was constituted (1732).

Through the next three centuries, leading lights of World politics, arts, sports, and society in general have contributed to the success of Freemasonry. Attracting men from all walks of life and corners of society such as Mozart the famous composer, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle author of the Sherlock Holmes books, Kipling, Shackleton, Fleming, through to much loved entertainers such as Peter Sellers, Johnny Cash and Rick Wakeman, all of them freemasons.

And let’s not forget the long-standing tradition of attracting serving and ex-military personnel into a place of camaraderie, friendship, and respect. From Sir Winston Churchill himself, through to the legendary Lt.Col. ‘Paddy’ Maine DSO*** and on to Sgt. Johnson Beharry VC.

In 2032 Anchor and Hope will celebrate their 300th anniversary as a working lodge. The Lodge and its members will have witnessed 300 years of historical events across the globe and all aspects of life.

If you are an existing Freemason, why not consider sharing in the next chapter of our history and become a member of our lodge, one of the oldest English lodges in operation today.

If you want to learn more, considering or have made the decision to enter freemasonry, why not get in touch with us at Anchor and Hope No.37 and we can discuss your application to join and be part of our upcoming celebrations.
